25 Mar Focused Faith
Joy England, President / Founder
Hey there everyone!
I am back with the second installment for the Advocates blog. Our first blog was all about first days, new beginnings and how to navigate it all. Today I want to follow that up with my interpretation of what gets you to those first days and what will sustain your forevermore days. I can only speak for myself. To get to the point of taking a first step in the direction of your future, you must have some level of faith. Faith that this thing you are chasing is either a) worth pursuing or b) meant to be a part of your path; in my case it was c) all of the above. All of us are likely to define faith; differently, my definition is the confidence in what we hope for and the assurance of what we do not see; Hebrews 11:1.
Faith is what absolutely got me to my day ones. Faith is what sustains me every day after that. What I have recently learned is that there is another F word that is super important to ensure that my first days happen and that my feet keep moving towards my future. That F word is FOCUS. My faith is embedded deeply into the fabric of who I am, my focus can be shifty and require some babysitting. Let me explain. I am someone who has an abundance of faith, this gift has allowed me to open a business, travel with my children, pursue education and to conquer some of the most mind-numbing fears. It was my focus that I had to wrestle to the death to keep it under control. I recently faced one of the more difficult tests in my life so far; it was not easy, but it was necessary. Something I learned in this test was where you focus your mind, will outweigh where you lay your faith. Focus is a driving force for our decisions and reactions; we get focused on our goals, on our families, on our finances, on our success. What about when we get focused on our fears, what happens to our decision making and our ability to move towards our futures? I will tell you with confidence what happens to our movement toward the future when we focus on our fears, it is paralyzed. I am fresh from the fires of a test of all tests, and I am here to tell you that if you shift your focus if your eyes are set on the things that will drive your faith, then you will overcome the paralysis of focused fear. The funny thing about focused fear is that it can almost look and feel like focused wisdom. When in actuality we have convinced ourselves that we are acting with caution, but I encourage you to dig a bit deeper are you being responsible or reluctant? Responsibility is a tool we should have, reluctance is a reaction to the perception of fear. So, we are reluctant to take that business call or register for that college class because we fear rejection or failure. We refuse to invest in that new program or pursue that new investor because we are fearful they won’t share our vision and will destroy our hopes. Reluctance may feel like protection but really its suffocation, we end up suffocating our own faith in the future at the hands of fear of the unknown. I am not sitting here on a soapbox with a megaphone and a banner yelling “face your fears, you big wimp!” I am here standing with you in your fears saying “you got this! Fight for your future! It is only scary on this side, take the step, move in the direction of faith, you won’t be disappointed!!” Faith is hard work, it takes guts, and most of all it takes focus. I am not saying you won’t face something that scares you and find out well, that did not work out like I had hoped You absolutely will have those moments, a lot of them. The difference is that you will learn that your worst fear, that worst outcome you dreed, only comes when you don’t obey the call to move towards your future. The thing about fear is that its only scary when it’s in the dark, and you bury your head from it. Once you shine the light of faith on it, you will see, almost immediately, “oh, that was not so scary after all.” The more you face those fears with your focused faith you will see it gets easier and easier to push past the fear and before you know it you are walking into your future.
Keep stepping my friends, keep your faith bigger than you fear and you are unstoppable!
